Pianist
— Fanfare
Internationally acclaimed Lithuanian pianist Rasa Vitkauskaite has been praised for her “artistry of poetic and observant sensitivity” (Gramophone) and described as “a Beethoven interpreter of penetrating insight” (Fanfare). She is the principal pianist of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, a voting member of the Recording Academy, and the artist behind a distinguished catalogue of solo, concerto, and chamber music recordings. A Steinway Artist, she has performed in more than 30 countries worldwide.
Season highlights include the launch of The Bridgetower Project, a major artistic initiative exploring the story and legacy of the violin virtuoso George Bridgetower, with a performance at Carnegie Hall this fall. In 2027, Rasa will release the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas with Tchaikovsky Gold Medal–winning violinist Ilya Kaler.
Her album A Concert Piano Christmas at Boston Symphony Hall was celebrated by Gramophone for its “remarkable high-wire acrobatics,” while Limelight praised its “masterful technique and palpable sense of joy.” Her recording of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor has been compared to the legendary Rudolf Serkin recording with the New York Philharmonic. She has also recorded Mendelssohn’s Double Concerto with violinist Ilya Kaler.
Rasa won the Grand Prix at the Mendelssohn Cup Piano Competition in Italy and was awarded a Kathryn Wasserman Davis grant supporting a concert tour of Israel. She was featured on Chicago’s prestigious Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, broadcast live on WFMT and affiliated stations nationwide, and has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Budapest Sinfonia, and I Solisti di Perugia, among others.
An avid chamber musician, Rasa has recorded five chamber music albums — Contrasts, Latin Journey, American Tribute, Romanza, and Rhapsodie Française — and performs regularly with clarinetist Jonathan Cohler and violinist Ilya Kaler. Her collaborators have also included violinists James Buswell and Irina Muresanu, cellist Julia Bruskin, clarinetist Franklin Cohen, and members of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Mexico National Symphony.
Rasa studied at the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts in Vilnius, Lithuania, and the United World College of the Adriatic in Italy, where she earned the International Baccalaureate Diploma. She subsequently completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at The Boston Conservatory. Her principal teachers include Randall Hodgkinson, Michael Lewin, Alberto Miodini, Muza Rubackytė, and Jūratė Karosaitė.
A frequent guest teacher, Rasa has given masterclasses at Ohio University, the University of Akron, the National University of Rosario in Argentina, and the Carlos Gomes State Institute in Belém, Brazil. She is also a sought-after adjudicator and has served on the juries of competitions organized by the Steinway Society, University of Rhode Island, Westfield State University, and the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association, among others.
